Habit is he tendency or disposition to act in a particular way.  It is formed when something is done consistently, which then becomes embedded in the subconscious mind, forming what we call the default setting.

Once an action or thought embeds itself in the subconscious mind, through repetition, it becomes your habit. You automatically do it without thinking or giving it a second thought.

There are many things that we do without giving thought to the process, such as breathing, talking and walking to name a few.  Think about the route that you take to and from work everyday…is it relatively the same?  Think about the time you wake up each morning…is that the same each day?  There are many things that we do that we don’t give a second thought to.  This is the default setting.

Our default setting is there for a good reason.  It is what keeps us safe, healthy, happy and prevents certain things from happening.  Which is a good thing, right?  But what happens when our default setting is not keeping us safe, healthy or happy?  What if is it the setting that is actually preventing us from gaining the success that we desire in our lives?  Would you want to change this?

Identifying the habits that do not work for you is important and is also the first step.  Start by paying close attention to what you do on a day-to-day basis.  If you are one who is regularly late for work, take a look at your daily habits…When you wake up do you get up or do you turn over, press snooze and sleep for another 5 minutes?  You will begin to notice a pattern, not just in your actions but in your thoughts too.  Yes, even the way we think is a habit.  Are you thinking about lack or abundance?  These thoughts stem from your childhood and were embedded through repetition.  So, changing these habit will not be easy but it can be done.

The good news is that once they have been changed, they become part of the default system and you will begin to do it without thinking about it.

How To Change Your Habits

  1. Replace your old habit with a new one.  If you don’t, the likely-hood is that you will go back to doing the same old thing.
  2. Self-talk – Tell yourself what you are going to do.  Self-talk is important but make sure it is encouraging and positive.  Also, make it exciting and describe the end vision with full emotion.
  3. Persistence – Be persistent, even if you fail a couple of times, don’t let that discourage you.  Keep trying.
  4. Be consistent – Remember that is was through repetition that this habit was formed, so you need to repeat the new action or thought pattern for it to become a new habit.
  5. Time – It takes time to form a new habit just like it took time for the old habit to be formed.   Follow through for between 30-45 days and you will find that it will then become a habit.

We are what we what we repeatedly do.  Excellence, then is not an act, but a habit. ~ Aristotle

It’s your choice what actions you take everyday.  Don’t allow your habits to stop you from getting the success that you desire.  Take action and change them.
