8 Ways To Get The Most From Social Media Efforts – Tips For Your Business

We all know that we should be using social media in our marketing in some shape or form.  However, the one thing that gets overlooked is the general approach to social media.

What should you be thinking about as a business owner? What are the long-term trends that your business should be investing in? And what makes for good social media content?  Here are 8 important tips that you should be considering if you are to make your social media efforts a success.

Commit To Social Media

Once you decide that you will be using social media as part of your marketing strategy, commit to it.  Decide on the platform that you’ll be using and just know that it will be challenging and there will be some days where you will want to give up, but DON’T! Stick with it as it will be well worth the effort.  But note, that it can take up to a year of consistent posting to get a handle on what resonates with your audience.

Perfecting Your Bio

What does your bio say?  Chocoholic? Raw Vegan? Entrepreneur? A bio is what will often stop people in their tracks.  It’s what makes people remember you and to be quite honest if you have the above words in your bio, the chances are that people won’t remember you.  Why?  Those words are vague, overused and forgettable.

So, what do you do?

Be intriguing. If you want to have followers on social media, you have to put your best foot forward. Your bio has to be interesting so make sure you add your hobbies and interests.  Clearly articulate, what it is that you do and make sure that this is consistent across all platforms and keep an eye on your keywords that you use and SEO.

Defining Your Style Or Brand Persona

On social media, there is so much noise and the best and only way to stand out is to have your own style.  This means defining your brand persona.

Think about it… You follow certain brands because of their style.  It’s style that makes you stand out from the crowd and allows you to build the know-like-trust factor with your audience.

Start out by thinking about what you, as a brand, would like to share…

  1. Hobbies
  2. Habits
  3. Interests

These are the things that you could share online and should help you find your voice so that you can make it clear to all your visitors what you or your brand are all about.

Plan Your Posts

There’s nothing worse than waking up each morning and trying to figure out what to piece of content to post. It’s what makes people think that social media is time wasted.  It can all be overwhelming and quite frankly daunting.  If this is you then, the good news is that you can turn this around today.  Start by figuring creating themes for each post or each day e.g. Engagement posts, Behind the scenes, Fun/Off topic etc…  Don’t complicate things for yourself, try to keep it simple!

Know The Best Times To Post

This is something that confuses many people.  It can be the most daunting starting point for anyone, let alone those that are trying to sell a product or service.  The thing is there’s no fast and hard rule for anyone.  It all depends on your industry and audience.  Take a look at your analytics data.  Each platform has their own version but you should be able to see when the best time is for you to post your content.  Allowing you to stop guessing and be more deliberate with your posting.  But most importantly, keep testing and you’ll discover the sweet spot for your brand and content.

Staying On Top Of Analytics

This somewhat touches on the previous point, however, it’s not just knowing when to post.  Which of your Instagram posts get the most engagement and when? Is your Facebook strategy translating into leads?  What are your top performing tweets? Are your pins converting browsers into buyers?  The chances are that if you don’t have access to any social media analytics data, knowing the answers to these questions can be hard.

The simple fact is that data is queen!  With data, you’re not just shooting blindly into the ether and winging it.  You are making informed decisions about your business growth. Get comfortable with testing and learning!

Pay To Play

To truly get the best from any social media platform, you have to think about doing ads.  Most businesses don’t take social media seriously and don’t want to pay to get the reach that they want.  For instance, Facebook is now predominantly a pay to play platform for business. Organic reach on business pages has dramatically reduced unless you’re boosting post or paying for ads. So, if you want to play with the BIG boys, you’re going to have to think about paid ads.

Experiment With Video

Video is a hot topic right now on social media and top marketers are all over it.  With YouTube, Facebook LIVE, Periscope and many others, there’s no excuse not to try video.  There’s no easier or better way to build the know-like-trust factor faster.  However, many businesses say that they struggle with “what” to create a video about but the best solution to this is to sort out your content.  Take a look at your analytics and see what content gets the most engagement and create a video around that topic.  Also, listen to your followers, what are the most talked about topics.  Use this also, to create video content.
